For the most part do you just clean and repack your own?
Also, what is the expected life of a radiator switch?

I did not understand well your question?
My car is almost 30 years old and only once radiator switch was changed because one terminal fall off.
Also i put in additional switch in cabin, just in case of failure main radiator switch.
In hot summer days while i am driving in traffic jam i manually power fan to be sure

I've got a clicking from the CV joint at the wheel during a hard turn. It seems like the boots have torn. Rather than replacing them, I am considering disassembling them, cleaning them, re-greasing (repacking) them, and installing new boots. Just curious if that's the common solution, or whether you just generally buy new ones.

As to the switch, I have not seen my fan engage. I don't know at what temperature it should activate, but feeding power to it manually does turn it on. Currently my test leads are living under the hood of the Yugo to run the fuel pump and fan.

Sometimes re-greasing can help, but if you can find new one it would be better to replace CV joint.
Clicking usually mean that joint is over and it should be replaced.

Fan should engage at 92C. If manually fan is starting, switch is defective
Those two wires that are going to switch, when are connected together fan must start, without feeding additional power.

I've found one joint on ebay for $40. Otherwise I am paying a minimum of $92 for a joint at yugoparts. There are some assembled shafts on ebay in the $60 range, but I don't know who built them or where. Something tells me a sweatshop built shaft out of China would be inferior to the job you'd do yourself

Try to find fiat part in US, it should fit from many Fiat cars.
Now i cannot check in tecdoc to see compatibility list because i am at work, tonight i can check.

cleaning and regreasing should do the trick,i done on mine that before 2 years and still holds on..if doesnot work,replace them..

We are buying new cv joints when they start clicking. Boots too. Later on, if boots torn out, just change them on time and you won't have any problems. It is the part that can last very long. Boots are problem usually.

Fiat parts are better in quality than Yugo/Zastava parts Wink

I've never cleaned and regreased my CV joints, on the left side is still factory CV (Slovenian Unior) and on the right side is Metelli, installed about 10 years ago. Take a wild guess which one is still silent.
As people have said, just make sure the rubber boots are not defective, and that there is still grease inside, and you're golden.

I'm going to be replacing at least three boots, one inner and two outer. I have ordered the $40 NOS joint, and am considering ordering inner joints at $12 each. Going to have to order boots and axle nuts from yugoparts. All the joints are getting disassembled and greased, and the right outside probably replaced. Between that and a timing belt (no tensioner available at the parts store) I should be good so long as the engine holds together.

You probably don't need the tensioner mount, so you can just get a ball bearing in those dimensions. Someone else will tell you what the dimensions are.

I'll tell me what the dimensions are... I have calipers. I am a mechanic after all, I've just never worked on Slavic hardware. Who knows, the bearing might be fine.

If you are changing the belt, change the bearing too, mine was fine until it kicked the bucket one afternoon. Very Happy
Was lucky enough though, since 1.1 is an interferrence engine.

Who is to say if the bearing they sell me is Chinese, if it's any better than the old one? We put a set of Chinese fan shaft bearings in a John Deere B, and they lasted all of six hours.
We'll see if NAPA has a match, or Kaman...

Change the position of CV joints and grease in them. Left one put on the right side, and otherwise.

Just do that and it will be ok Wink You have to buy a special grease for CV joints - NLGI 2, with EP additives, MoS2 (or other solid lubricant), that is compatible with rubber.

When you change the possition of CV joints, you automatically change the direction of rotation, and on that side they are as new Smile

P.S. Keep that in reserve.

Why would you? Get a pair and keep them in reserve, dont change them if you don't need to.
