Timing belt install

Počalji od heviarti taj Pet 07 Jul 2017, 04:33

I went to install a new timing belt today and ran into a few hurdles. The manual states that you loosen the nut on the tensioner and then "push on". I started to loosen the nut and coolant started leaking from somewhere. I Immediately tightened it again, and the leak stopped. So, how is this tensioner supposed to work? I need to release the tension, but I am unsure how. I'm used to them being a swinging affair with a spring, or having some kind of a bolt to adjust them. I am missing something here, and I don't know what.
Second, I need to drop the alternator belt. That seems simple, and I have removed the bolt in the slot, and loosened the one at the base. It seems like swinging the alternator towards the engine and up should give the belt enough slack to remove it. I have so much tension that the belt is still tight with the ear on the alternator swung past the adjuster slot. I've either got the wrong belt, or I am not seeing something that should be obvious.
Anyway, some opinions would be appreciated. Thanks.

On 1.3 engine, there is water jacket behindtencioner bolt,so its normal that leaks coolant if stud gets loose..maybe is nut sezed with stud..you losse nut, push tensioner and tight nut and you have losse timing belt
Alternatir belt is like that,780 is tight and 830 is ok for adjusting, you have 780 that is harder to install and remove

If I was 100% sure what the Serbian word for timing belt was, I'd try the search. As it was I went back seven or eight pages and didn't see a likely topic. I'm currently waiting on duolingo to release a Serbian course. I know some Russian, but that's like trying to read Italian when all you know is Spanish.
I'm also a little curious about this tensioner now; if it only runs on a bolt that stays in one position, how does it supply an even tension? What happens I you need more or less tension? If the bolt only moves back and forth along its center line, how does one ever release the tension?

Zac,tema je za zupcasti,ne klinasti

Tensioner bolt is stacionary and tensioner is tensionig with spring that is on engine mount..when you want less or more tension you just move tensioner carier and move it back for less tension or forward for more tension..

Oh, OK... It is a slotted swinging tensioner. I guess I didn't see the slot or spring. I'm currently having a fight trying to find a bearing. Local auto parts places don't seem to list them. The only sky number I have is Italian. It would take sky two months to get it, or a week from an outfit in Texas. Surely someone around here has it.

OK, I see how the whole thing works. It took the whole mess flying apart when I tried to remove the bearing, but I see. It's a linear coil spring behind a captured button that presses on the bearing carrier. Carrier hinges below on a pin mounted in the block. Apparently it doesn't just come out either. Bearing is ugly, but the timing belt is not the original thankfully. I've been trying to find a fiat shop most of the day in hopes of finding a new bearing, but no luck. Still not sure how it's intended for the bearing to actually come out, or how you're intended to hold the tensioner off the belt until it's installed... But I'll come up with something since it's apart right now.
Other than ordering from Texas and waiting a week, I am stuck on a bearing unless I can find the part somewhere around here.

Prvi je na engleskom, tako da bolje da ostane tako nego da stranci traze..

If you come in Serbia, i will found you bearing 😅

Well, timing belt change was successful. Still not sure why everything was lined up, but it seemed to be firing on 3 instead of 4. It runs so I'm not complaining.
It turns out the trick is this: loosen the tensioner, then use a long 3/8 extension to push it into the rearward position. Brace the extension against the body above the headlight, then tighten the nut. Remove the extension, install the belt, then loosen the nut. Re-tighten after it puts the belt under tension and it's done.
Somehow I doubt I will be in Serbia any time soon. As much as I like my Yugo, I would probably be junkyard crawling all the heavy equipment and tracked stuff.

Check timing marks and ignition advance, that wants to make missfire problems
