Transmission linkage broke...

Počalji od heviarti taj Sub 14 Okt 2017, 03:24

So, I lost my transmission linkage this morning. Is this a common failure? I tightened the bolt in the center of the rubber deal some weeks ago, and a lot of the slop came out of the shifter. It felt a lot better. I set my car to warming this morning, and when I came back I had no response from the shifter. Luckily, my Great Uncle was having breakfast nearby. We took the part to his shop and welded it with stainless.

Two joints in a rod like this doesn't make a lot of sense. It seems like if the bolts became loose, the linkage could fold rather than shift. It does look like someone had welded this plate before, closer to the rubber. It may have been cracked for a long time. I ordered a new part today. Hopefully this one holds up for a week.

Yes, common failure on Yugos. Solution for fixing that problem is a bolt or two direct in trough the rubber to hold two metal pieces or make a new linkage without the rubber, just a straight piece of steel. Look up for YUgisa's DIY jobs, he was making that think, it is called the ''Gearfix''.

I'm working on items to carry for a 'Yugo survival kit'. I'm told a clutch cable might not be a bad idea either.

This one had already been bolted, the tab on the end broke.

Than make a new one from scrap. One steel plate 20mm thick. Shifting will be better and there will be no rist of braking that bar again. Also a good thing would be to drill out the shaft on gearbox where that bar connects for M7 bolt.

I have a new one on the way. My friend Jay in Texas sells Yugo parts. He asked me to link him to the forum, which I did last night. We may have him as a member soon. He is looking to buy things like fuel tanks, since we are out. You can find his website at www.yugoparts.com

I am currently working on something to replace the rubber joint. It seems to me that we need to be able to adjust the amount of cushion given by the coupler. Too much, and the shifter feels very vague. Too little and you flex or break the other parts. I may have caused my own problem, since I tightened the bolt in the middle of the rubber gumby. I may have tightened it too much. It felt a little too tight and grabby afterward. It was way too loose beforehand; in gear and neutral felt about the same. I place a lot of importance on shifter feel, especially since I drive a semi. The Yugo does not lend itself to progressive shifting like a semi.

I will hit the search and see what you've built.

PREVOD

@heviarti
I know you've said shipping fees are big, but maybe you can have a list of smaller parts that you need for your Yugo or that you want to upgrade that few of us can find where you can buy it.
For example our forum member YUgisa is creating modification parts for Zastava vehicles and he has this transmission linkage and these bolts and washers set that together eliminate wobble in the gear stick and last a long time. Something like a short shifter on a budget. Those 2 things together costs if I am not wrong 2250din which is 22$. Similar price that you would pay in the US but you eliminate few problems and you can set up gear stick to go in gear either smooth or little bit hard, kind of a "sporty" feeling. Just to be said I am not advertising for no one. If paying is problem I've got PayPal account for years now and I think I can receive money. I do need to check that because I've used it just to pay for stuff Smile

I thought I'd try to be a better friend for a while by including Google translate on what I had to say, but it was suggested that Google translate might be making as bad a mess translating to Serbian as it sometimes does translating to English. I'll have to find it again, but one thread I was interested in was translated so badly it sounded like a crazy person. There are quite a few technical terms that translate badly. I can see why it would be called a 'Cobra'. I've been fiddling with a couple of language courses to see if I can get a handle on Serbian, but so far all I recognize is some lyrics from a few songs that might offend someone. (Long story, I got sucked into a thread on Turbofolk on some other forum, and now Roki and Lepi Mica are in my Playlist)

How does Yugisa's system work, exactly? I see some flat roller bearings, which are kind of an oddity. The only thing I ever get into with flat roller bearings is the directional clutches in an 800/830 John Deere swather. I was considering an adjustable ball and spring assembly to give both better feel and adjustability, as well as some cushion. My great uncle thinks that once I hit the reverse and fifth position, the cushion provided by the rubber donut stops and I am flexing the tip of the 'cobra'. I am inclined to believe him, since he is 80, and probably the best mechanic in this part of the country. The fact I hit the passenger seat to get reverse bears that up.

As to ordering parts, I'm waiting on that. So far the only things I need that I can't buy here is a pair of fog lights and a tray. I'm going to see if Vukiclab can bring a pair of trays with his car if they let him import it. I need one, and so does Jay, my parts guy. Jay might also be interested in buying things like Yugisa's kit for his store. There are various parts that have dried up here in the US. Fact is I am sending my speedo cable to an outfit in Portland to be rebuilt. Jay has cables, but they're fiat cables and way too long. They also have a claw type end that doesn't work very well. When I get into an engine, I may be ordering the big cam from someone in Serbia. I may already have it, I don't know. Someone here said some of the 1.3s got sent over with a bigger cam, mine may very well be wore out but it makes plenty of power. I've built engines before, but never one of these. I got the specs on another thread because my engine machine shop has nothing on them. I may also need some stuff for a transmission eventually. I plan to build one with an engine. My transmission is howling at about 45 MPH and above. I just bought a factory service manual, but it doesn't have all the specs for the five speed.

Keep your eyes in the off topic forum, in a year or two a good friend and distant relation (his side of the family stayed in Lithuania about 800 years ago) of mine will be headed to Serbia. I'll make sure to post when he is headed that way.

Not 'big' uncle, 'great' uncle; a brother to my grandfather. He was about a mile away having breakfast at a local restaurant when I found out my linkage was broken. He has a complete shop, including a welder. He was kind enough to drop by and pick me up on his way back to the shop. We used his equipment to fix the broken part.

I really don't wish to anger anyone. I'm trying to abide by your rules. I'm happy to change something if I am causing anyone discomfort. My diagnosis methodology may be a little different than you are used to, but perhaps I can learn something new from you guys. Again, I apologize I don't have any Serbian yet. It's difficult to find a good language course. So far the only one that has any content doesn't have any context, and no pronunciation.

heviarti ::How does Yugisa's system work, exactly?
YUgisa woud be the best to explain it as he is the creator of those parts but I will give you a simple version in the meantime.
Basically first picture is replacement for 'Kobra' or Transmission linkage where with how much you tighten the screws you get more that stiffer kind of a "sporty" feeling and if you loose them little bit you can get that smooth (going into gear with one or two fingers) style. Also, because material is solid and 'Kobra' is more like a rubber you eliminate that loose feeling in the stick shift and going from left to right while shifting is much more solid and throw is shorter. Second picture is set that is replacing spring and pin that are securing gearchange rod to lever. There is free space in there and that is one of the reasons why as you said
heviarti :: The fact I hit the passenger seat to get reverse

With both items installed you will get that solid feeling while changing gears, stick shift feels much more direct while shifting. I don't know how else to describe it.
As for the camshaft I honestly don't have any idea. You will need to wait for someone else that has more knowledge to reply.
Specs for five speed manual you can find in Haynes-Yugo manual. Try to download it online, if it isn't available I will try to upload it.

Serbian language is quite hard to learn and there is no need to apologize for not understanding it. Whatever you say or do ZAC will be angry because he has problems with USA and those topics should really stay off this forum...

I'd be willing to sit down and talk with ZAC somewhere off the forum. The decisions of our government are not often the decisions of our people. He'd probably find we agree about a lot. I try to tiptoe around opinions that might offend over stuff that happened in the '90s. (I was in school then), or Serbian people I think are heroes and not criminals; one of whom is on a sticker I am buying for my car and the other the subject of a song. But I will say no more about that.

The factory manual has the transmission specs laid out in a way I like, and has more facts about the gearing that I like. I'll post a pic later. Right now, food and laundry.

It is 30x4mm metal profile, it is firm enough not to crack, but flexible enough to bend with moving engine if engine mounts are in good condition. It has 2 bearings in order to prevent unscrewing the bolt.

I put bearings because people were having problems with tightening the bolt, they put it too loose (unscrewing problem) or to tight and strip the thread.

I don't have that problem with my motorsport shifter Very Happy
